London, England is absolutely one of my favorite cities to explore and spend time in. There is so much to see and do, but also just great atmosphere to sit back and take it slow. You can plan a trip here on its own or as a stopping point on your way to other European destinations since American Airlines and British Airlines have a partnership, there are often direct flights or flights that layover here. I've spent a week here and seen how much I could accomplish on a 24 hour layover, while very different experiences - both great trips and options.
Here are a few of my favorite things to do or see in London. This is not an exhaustive list, there's so much to see and do here!
City Highlights
On one afternoon walk you can stroll past Buckingham Palace, see Big Ben, take in the atmosphere at Trafalgar Square and of course find a red phone booth!

Like many big cities, London is rich with arts and culture, with a bounty of museums offering amazing sights to behold. The National Gallery and the British Museum are big draws but they also have things like the Churchill War Rooms and the Charles Dickens Museum, something to spark any interest really.
Afternoon tea is a great way to break up the day and can be so much fun. Our hotel offered an option as do many locations around the city. We had actually made a day trip out to Leeds to meet up with some friends and saw the castle in the morning followed by tea in the area after. There are gorgeous bridges throughout the city but the most iconic one is probably the Tower Bridge (not the London Bridge!) and you can walk across it to take in all the sights. The London Eye is also one of my favorites. It is definitely catering to tourists, so lines can get long at peak times - but the ride is smooth and enjoyable and the views are spectacular!

New York has Broadway but London has the West End and it is just magical. This is home to the original production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and so much more! The Play that Goes Wrong was a ton of fun and I saw Matilda as well, as one of my favorite childhood movies I was enamored seeing it on the stage. If plans are flexible, you can sometimes find same-day discounts on tickets that are available. We scored third row seats to Book of Mormon on an unexpected layover in London!
Eat the local cuisine
As your resident foodie, of course I'm going to recommend tasting some of the amazing food. London is a major metroplex so you'll have all sorts of delightful things to try. Classics include a meat pie or fish and chips, but London also has fabulous curries so give those a try if you have more than one meal to enjoy here!
